Welcome to the OSU Philosophy Department
About the Department
The OSU Department of Philosophy offers an education emphasizing: (1) the critical evaluation of controversial ideas on a wide variety of topics; (ii) the history of ideas, critically analyzed; and (iii) familiarity with controversies and critical analysis skills applied to real-world issues. Major areas of concentration within the program include the History of Western Philosophy; Theoretical and Applied Ethics; and Philosophy of Religion. Individual Undergraduate courses range from Asian Philosophy and Philosophy & Literature to Philosophy of Mind and Philosophy of Science. The critical thinking skills on which philosophy is baed are increasingly important in various fields of employment, as well as for individual development and good citizenship. Philosophy has also historically been among the best majors for doing well on the LSAT exams. The Ethics Center, under the auspices of the Philosophy Department, underscores the department's commitment to bringing philosophical training to bear on real-world controversies and concerns. Conferences, roundtable discussions and world-class speakers have been sponsored on topics within Biomedical Ethics, Business Ethics, and Philosophy of Law. A recent NSF Grant was awarded to the Director of the Ethics Center for developing new approaches to teaching Research Ethics.
Careers
Philosophy majors are competitive for all general career paths involving clear and critical thinking, and well-developed speaking and writing skills. They match up nicely compared with other Humanities and Liberal Arts majors in terms of employment skills. They are also specifically qualified to proceed to Law School, advanced Theological Training, various Public Service areas, and Graduate Training in Philosophy aimed at an academic career.
